In this\u00a0<span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"b97c61be-f6a7-4e7f-89af-6877ccbdfd06\">post<\/span>, we will go over how to add another domain to your existing cPanel account. This tutorial\u00a0will\u00a0<span class=\"complexword\">require<\/span>\u00a0that you have a hosting account and have access to cPanel\u00a0<span class=\"complexword\">to<\/span>\u00a0add the domain.<\/p>\n<p><em>Are you unfamiliar with what DNS is or what the different DNS records mean? Please review\u00a0<a href=_-2684.html>cPanel&#8217;s DNS FAQ article\u00a0<\/a>for more information!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this walkthrough, cpanel.rocks is our primary domain, and\u00a0<a href=_-2685.html>cpdocs.com<\/a>\u00a0is our addon domain. We will also need the\u00a0<a href=dns%2bfaq.html#DNSFAQ-Whatisanameserver?\">nameservers from the web host,<\/a>\u00a0and the IP address that the addon domain will point to.\u00a0The IP address is\u00a0found in cPanel by clicking the\u00a0<a href=_-2686.html>Server Information<\/a>\u00a0tool under General Information and then viewing the Shared IP address value<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"6f4fde2f-0af1-4b4a-a2ff-577906ffa6de\">Let&#8217;s recap<\/span>\u00a0with some example information for the necessary DNS information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>cpanel.rocks<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0<span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"edda3337-20c6-4136-80e6-09dfff101188\">The<\/span>\u00a0account\u2019s main domain. This domain was set up for you by your hosting provider. In other words, we already control this domain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>cpdocs.com<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The domain we are going to add to our account.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ns1.cpanel.rocks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The server\u2019s primary nameserver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ns2.cpanel.rocks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The server\u2019s secondary\u00a0nameserver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>209.59.172.159<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The IP address our addon domain will use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is an addon domain?<\/h2>\n<p>The cPanel &#8220;Addon Domains&#8221; feature allows you to manage multiple domains from a single hosting account. Unlike with Parked domains, Addon domains are expected to be completely different websites all hosted inside the same cPanel account. You can also create additional sub-accounts (for example, email addresses) for your addon domains.<\/p>\n<h2>Why addon domains?<\/h2>\n<p>You can use them to save money. With addon domains, you don\u2019t have to purchase an additional hosting account for each domain you operate. You can simply create addon domains and split your existing account&#8217;s resources.<\/p>\n<h2>Addon domains. How do they work?<\/h2>\n<p>Like subdomains, addon domains are\u00a0stored in a subdirectory in your home directory. Essentially, online\u00a0visitors to your addon domain are\u00a0routed to this directory. As shown below, you may specify the name and precise location of this directory\u00a0when creating the addon domain. Most commonly, the document root for any addon domain will be in\u00a0<span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"62759c76-6f57-4a94-864e-459e3bd49c20\"><em>\/home\/$user\/$addon-domain\/<\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0In our example, the addon domain\u2019s\u00a0<em>public_html<\/em>\u00a0subdirectory will be\u00a0<em>\/home\/$user\/cpdocs.com\/<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"665fbea8-8566-449c-8a3e-310aa8119fa7\">What do I need to do before creating the addon domain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While not required, it&#8217;s a good idea to update the DNS of your domain to resolve to the server where it\u00a0<span class=\"passivevoice\">is hosted<\/span>.\u00a0<span class=\"hardreadability\">We recommend contacting your web host for the proper nameservers and IP address for your server<\/span>.\u00a0<span class=\"veryhardreadability\">Then, take this information to your domain&#8217;s registrar (or your hosting provider if they are the domain registrar) and update the domain&#8217;s DNS settings<\/span>. If you&#8217;re not sure who your domain&#8217;s registrar is, you can always search for your domain on\u00a0<a href=_-2687.html>WHO.is<\/a>.\u00a0<span class=\"hardreadability\">This action will perform a lookup and display which company was responsible for registering your domain<\/span>.\u00a0<span class=\"hardreadability\">If your domain is not registered, this would be the perfect opportunity to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"complexword\">purchase<\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\">\u00a0the domain from your preferred registrar<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>How do I add the\u00a0addon\u00a0domain to cPanel?<\/h2>\n<p>To add an addon domain, we can use cPanel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Addon Domains<\/em>\u00a0feature, in the\u00a0<em>Domains<\/em>\u00a0section of the cPanel interface.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=_-2688.html><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=_-2688.html alt=\"Addon Domains in cPanel Interface \" width=\"580\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Addon Domains Icon in cPanel user interface<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ol>\n<li>Enter the domain name in the\u00a0<em>New Domain Name<\/em>\u00a0field.\u00a0<span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"5be840f5-e968-4541-8f07-44bf0bb7f7c6\">In this case, we will enter\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"5be840f5-e968-4541-8f07-44bf0bb7f7c6\">cpdocs<\/span><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"5be840f5-e968-4541-8f07-44bf0bb7f7c6\">.<\/span><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"5be840f5-e968-4541-8f07-44bf0bb7f7c6\">com<\/span><\/em><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"5be840f5-e968-4541-8f07-44bf0bb7f7c6\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Ensure the FTP username is appropriate in the next field. In this scenario, we will leave it as its default value,\u00a0<em>cpdocs<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the document root is in the appropriate place. In this example, we will use the default value,\u00a0<em>\/home\/$user\/cpdocs.com\/<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter and confirm the password you want to use with this domain in the appropriate fields.\u00a0<em>Note-<\/em> There is a checkbox to create an FTP account when adding your addon domain. Unless you specifically need an FTP account for the addon domain (i.e., allowing limited access to a developer or similar), we do not recommend creating this FTP account.<\/li>\n<li>Click the\u00a0<em>Add<\/em>\u00a0button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=_-2689.html><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=_-2689.html alt=\"Create an Addon domain \" width=\"580\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image shows the Create an addon domain interface from cPanel user interface<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you see an error in this interface, that means that your hosting provider has not enabled this feature for your account, or there may be another problem. Please contact your hosting provider to fix the error before continuing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"3af0509d-b33b-4a50-b685-ad3998a8625c\">Verifying our DNS settings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"23031692-62ce-4c6a-b358-7b3200821459\">When adding an addon domain, cPanel will automatically create a DNS zone file for the domain. <\/span>From the <em>Zone Editor<\/em> interface, we can see that the A record for &#8216;cpdocs.com&#8217; is set to\u00a0209.59.172.159, the cPanel account IP address. If you do not see those options,\u00a0your account may not have the correct feature permissions. The next step is to talk to your hosting provider to have the Advanced DNS Editor feature added. Once these are enabled, you will be able to see all of the DNS records assigned to your domain.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to assign a different A record to your domain, you may use the &#8220;Edit an A record&#8221; function in cPanel&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=_-2690.html>Zone Editor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=_-2691.html><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=_-2691.html alt=\"Add an A record for &quot;cpdocs.com&quot; \" width=\"460\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image showing the Add an A record interface in cPanel user interface<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Please make sure when editing the A record for your addon domain, there is a period at the end of the domain name.\u00a0<span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"6033dc6c-fea2-4306-88dd-056e825841b2\">If this period is missing, the DNS record will be incorrect, as it will not be considered a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).<\/span> Now that the DNS record has been added, the domain will begin a period of propagation. DNS records can sometimes take up 24 hours to fully propagate, so a bit of patience will be required.\u00a0 Once the propagation period has passed, your domain will be publicly accessible!<\/p>\n<h2>I\u2019ve set up my addon domain!
